Margin visibility review
Shopify Product CSV Margin Audit
Check product profitability at a glance by uploading a Shopify product export and reviewing gross margin amount and margin percent across your catalog without leaving your browser.

No CSV selected
Shopify hides the margin metric on most product list views, making it hard to spot unprofitable variants during catalog review or pricing work. This audit runs locally in your browser with the File API, with no data uploaded to a server. It reads the Variant Price and Cost per item columns, calculates gross margin amount (Price minus Cost) and margin percent ((Price minus Cost) divided by Price times 100), flags missing cost, missing or invalid price, negative or zero margins, and a 20 percent low-margin threshold, then exports a margin review worksheet sorted by margin percent ascending so the worst margins surface first. The worksheet is for manual review only; it does not call Shopify APIs and does not write or sync any pricing back to Shopify.
Import blockers
Common causes this scan checks
- Shopify does not show a margin column in the product list, so profitability is tedious to review across a large catalog.
- A supplier cost increase or a sale-price drop pushed some variants below a sustainable profit threshold without anyone noticing.
- Cost per item was imported or updated but its impact on each variant's margin was never reviewed side by side with price.
- Pricing strategy needs margin visibility per variant to decide what to reprice, resource from a cheaper supplier, or discontinue.
Workflow
How to use the cleaned CSV
- Export your Shopify product CSV including Handle, Title, Variant SKU, option columns, Variant Price, and Cost per item.
- Upload the CSV and review the warnings for missing cost, missing or invalid price, and negative or zero margin rows.
- Review the low-margin findings and decide whether to update supplier costs, adjust selling prices, or exclude unprofitable variants.
- Export the margin worksheet sorted by margin percent ascending and use it as a reference for repricing or discontinuation decisions.
Auto-fix policy
What the export can safely change
- Detects Variant Price, Cost per item, and product identity columns from common Shopify export headers and aliases.
- Calculates gross margin amount and margin percent for every row that has a valid positive price and a valid cost.
- Flags negative or zero margins (cost greater than or equal to price) and variants below a 20 percent low-margin threshold.
- Sorts the exported worksheet by margin percent ascending so the worst margins appear first, with no manual spreadsheet formulas required.

CSV example: product margin review and profitability
The margin audit calculates gross margin amount and margin percent, then sorts by margin percent ascending so the zero-margin t-shirt surfaces first as an urgent repricing candidate while the 79.99 percent hat shows a healthy margin near the bottom.

FAQ
Shopify CSV questions
Is this the same as the Shopify bulk price update audit?
No. The bulk price update audit reviews price-only update files for compare-at-price risks before a sale import. This margin audit reads cost plus price from a full product export to compute gross profitability per variant; it does not produce an import file.
What low-margin threshold does this use?
It flags any variant whose margin percent falls below 20 percent, in addition to negative or zero margins, so you can review whether to reprice, resource from a cheaper supplier, or discontinue it. The flag only changes which rows are highlighted, never the underlying data.
Does this upload my CSV to a server?
No. The entire audit runs locally in your browser using the File API. Cost data, prices, and the calculated margins never leave your device, and the tool never calls Shopify.
What happens when a variant has a negative margin?
The tool flags any row where Cost per item is equal to or higher than Variant Price. Those variants lose money or break even per sale and are surfaced first in the exported worksheet for price or supplier review.
