Customs data completeness

HS Code and Country of Origin Audit

International orders stall when variants ship without HS codes or origin countries. Audit every variant against its product siblings and inherit sensible defaults before the next import.

No CSV selected

No CSV selectedUpload an inventory or product export with HS Code and Country Code of Origin columns to audit customs data per variant.
Private by default. Your Shopify inventory or product export CSV data stays in this browser session. The export applies only safe deterministic changes and leaves manual-review items in the findings list.

Use this customs data audit when products with many variants need the same HS code and country of origin repeated on every row, and gaps only surface as carrier or managed-markets friction. Upload a Shopify inventory or product export carrying HS Code and Country Code of Origin columns; the audit groups variants by handle, flags variants missing values that their siblings define, suggests the product-level default to inherit, validates HS codes as 6-10 digit harmonized codes, and checks origin values against two-letter ISO country codes. The export is a variant-level worksheet for review before a manual import — it provides data checks, not customs or legal advice, and never writes to Shopify.

Import blockers

Common causes this scan checks

  • Shopify has no product-level default, so every variant repeats the same HS code by hand.
  • New variants get added without customs data and only fail at carrier label or customs time.
  • Origin countries are typed as full names instead of the ISO codes imports expect.
  • HS codes drift between formats like 6404.11 and 640411 across bulk edits.

Workflow

How to use the cleaned CSV

  1. Export inventory or products with HS Code and Country Code of Origin columns and upload the CSV.
  2. Review variants flagged as missing values their product siblings already define.
  3. Export the worksheet and copy the suggested defaults where the variant genuinely matches.
  4. Re-import the corrected customs data or update the values in Shopify admin.

Auto-fix policy

What the export can safely change

  • Detects handle, SKU, HS code, and country of origin columns from inventory or product exports.
  • Groups variants by product and suggests the most common sibling value for blank cells.
  • Validates HS codes as 6-10 digits and origin values as ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes.
  • Flags products with variant-specific overrides so intentional differences stay visible.

CSV example

CSV example: HS code and country of origin variant audit

The audit sees the large hat missing both customs values while its sibling defines them, so the worksheet suggests inheriting 650500 and CN — turning a silent customs gap into a one-cell copy decision.

FAQ

Shopify CSV questions

Which export carries HS codes and origin countries?

Shopify's inventory export includes HS Code and Country Code of Origin columns. Product exports prepared by apps or spreadsheets with the same columns work too.

Does it tell me the correct HS code for a product?

No. It checks format and consistency across your own variants. Classifying goods under the right harmonized code remains a merchant or customs-broker decision.

How are variant-specific overrides treated?

Products whose variants use different HS codes are flagged as informational, not as errors, because per-variant overrides are legitimate — the audit just makes them visible.

Is my catalog uploaded anywhere?

No. The CSV is read locally in your browser and nothing is stored or transmitted.
